Small Colleges Vs. Large Colleges

Compare/Contrast
As a high school student begins his search for the right college for himself, he must consider what he wants in a college. There are differences between colleges; therefore, he must choose the one that suits him best. He might look at smaller colleges; he might look at larger colleges. Both have their pros and cons; both have similarities and differences.

Small and large colleges have several similarities. Each consists of a campus made up of classrooms, dorms, a cafeteria, and sports facilities. Both teach certain areas in life as majors, as well as extracurricular classes. Both provide an education; when you go there, you will major in the field in which you want to make your career. However, not all colleges have the same majors.

There are differences as well; most of which outweigh the similarities. Most of the time, the school’s size brings about these differences. The size of a school affects its layout, the number of classrooms, and the size of the facilities and the campus. Smaller campuses provide fewer choices to students than larger campuses do. There are fewer clubs, sports, dorms, and classes. On the other hand, students at a smaller college have smaller classes and lower student to teacher ratios. With fewer students and better ability to talk, get help from, and fellowship with others, everyone knows everyone; and each specific person has a specific job or purpose on the campus. As a student on a larger campus, you wouldn’t know everyone, and everywhere you turn, there is someone new to meet, which can be both a good thing and a bad thing. Because of these differences, a student might feel more at home on a smaller campus. In addition, it can be much easier to get around on a smaller campus than on a large one. Each conveys an overall feeling of comfort: one is like living in the country or in a peaceful place, as if the students at your school are the only people in the world; the other is like living in a city full of people and adventures. Which of these two seem like a comfortable environment might help determine where you should go to college.

What is important in a college? This is up to you. As a student, you should be able to see a difference in separate colleges. When you find the college that clicks for you, you will go there. When you do, you will have chosen it because of its uniqueness and its differences from other colleges.
